LA Composer Suite

A client of the Studio People UK, moved to the LA California area, and needed a studio. He contacted them to see if they would come out and build his second studio. As it happened, we were living just 50 miles away. So we took on the project

The contract consisted of:
A small composer control room.
A recording room.
An isolation hall linking control room, WC to the rest of the property.

The studio was professionally designed by the Studio People UK (a company which my brother Peter, his wife Wendi and I started in 1993. And have been designing, building, wiring and outfitting studio facilities all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa for 30 years), and constructed by my team, KSIAir Services SoCal.

The control room was acoustically treated only. The additional walls were set on the structure's slab floor with a ceiling structure uncoupled from second floor structure. We installed a two 6mm pane window between control and recording room, as well and adding additional glass to the two exterior windows, both 6mm glass dark tint. Room was tuned with various absorbers at the rear of the room. It was also cooled by a dedicated ducted mini spit from Mitsubishi. The isolation door, diffusers and trim material came from the factory in UK as the client had a shipping container for all his possessions coming over..

The recording room was going to just be a floating floor in an existing single car garage, to be finish the following year as stage two. However, the client purchased a Yamaha grand piano, which needed to be located in this room. The summer temperature in this area can get up to 120 F. So we had to build out the isolation structure and add cooling with its own ducted mini split, again from Mitsubishi. This structure was a fully floating room, decoupled from the existing structure. We created a machine closet for the computer and amps. Also adding a isolation entrance. The access to this was from the exterior and not the control room. Mainly because of the lack of space in either room for a door set. All carpentry, as doors and windows had to be fabricated in our shop in SoCal.

We had to run a electrical feed all the way around the rear of the new build house, to power the studio and cooling units. We had 240v circuits for the LV ceiling lighting shipped from UK and for some of the clients British audio equipment. All other items were supplied locally.

The client was extremely happy with the look and performance of the rooms. He mentioned that his associates from the LA scene loved the studio.
